Mr. Leonce (Micky) Roger Roy, age 95, A lifelong resident of Lawrence, died peacefully on Monday, October 31, 2022 at the VA Hospital in W. Roxbury, after a brief illness, with his son present.
Born and raised in Lawrence, he was the son of the late Joseph and Ella (Bourque) Roy. He attended the Sacred Heart School in Lawrence and later with his brother the House of Angel Guardian elementary school in West Newbury. He enlisted in the US Army in 1946 and was stationed in Fort Lawton in Washington. He worked hard for many years as a laborer in construction before starting a fulltime career as a Brakeman with the Boston and Maine R.R. from which he retired soon after its sale. He was a lifelong member of the Lawrence Lodge of Elks and when younger enjoyed long rides, hillbilly music and dancing. He met his wife of 67 years, Mary Monica (Devaney) at the Commodore Ballroom in Lowell. A powerful swimmer in his youth he spent much time at the river through the years, especially with his pet dogs and in later years would canoe as his dogs swam. Sunday mornings he’d drive his pickup around the city throwing dog biscuits to dogs conditioned to bark on his approach, often waking the neighborhoods. He enjoyed cooking, eating and feeding his guests. He enjoyed yard work, was an avid gardener, renown for gifting his tomatoes and still labored hard well into his 80s.
He is survived by his daughter, Maryetta Dixon-Gamache & her husband Michael Gamache of Salem, NH; son, James Roy of Lawrence; grandsons, Jesse Dixon of Epping, NH, Jacob Dixon of Barnstead, NH; great grandsons, Tyler Dixon of Salem, NH, Brayden Dixon of Salem, NH and Phoenix (Little Micky) Dixon of Barnstead, NH; many nieces and nephews. A twin and the 8th of 11 children, in addition to his wife earlier this year, he was predeceased by his older brothers, Raymond and Constant; older sisters, Rita Roy, Julie Casey, Lucille Deshaies, Doris Proulx, Ella (Godsey) McGovern; his twin, Leo; and younger sisters, Arline Roy and Rena SanAntonio.
