The first time I met Aminta was when her son, Domingo, invited me to have lunch with him at her apartment in Salem, Mass. When I arrived, Domingo wasn't there and he sent me a message that he wouldn't be able to come. I was just beginning to learn Spanish at that time, and had no idea how I'd communicate with Aminta during my visit. I've heard that 90 percent of communication is not verbal, and it was true throughout our lunch together, that day eight years ago. Aminta communicated with her warm smile, receptive eyes, welcoming mannerisms, gentle voice and generous servings of bakalau, mangú, salad and hospitality. Every time we met, from that day on, she did nothing to belie those first impressions of her. The fact that her son is as compassionate and caring a person as he is also speaks volumes about the kind of woman Aminta was. Thank you, Domingo, for introducing me to your mother. I consider it an honor, to this day.
